The school
year begins with a very busy schedule. We are opening with class bonding
activities using Monday's during the month of September to bring each
of the classes together to collectively plan and commit to personal
and school goals. These have been very positive events and we thank
Maile Caravalho for assisting our new SAC with the planning and organizing.
We also want to give credit to our outstanding student leaders who
have really made these events memorable and worthwhile.
We also have
several new teachers on staff who bring new strength and expertise
to our school. Ms. Donna Smith comes to Kohala with many years experience
in teaching and student activities organizing and is serving as our
new Student Activities Coordinator. As SAC, Ms. Smith will coordinate
everything from elections to dances and most importantly student government.
Mr. Gilbert Fallau comes to Kohala to join Mr. Chris Brown in our
math program. He has many years teaching experience at Honokaa and
Pahoa before coming to Kohala. He also has been active in the paddling
program on the island, both competing and building canoes. Ms. Ellen
Stone comes to Kohala from Arizona. She will be working in our Special
Education program and brings an extensive experience in training guide
dogs and working with 4H programs. Ms. Cristy Athan is a former California
native who brings both classroom and counseling credentials to our
CSAP teaching position. She is an artist, poet, and an avid backpacker.
Mr. Johnnie Murphy is our new music impresario who got his teaching
degree and who worked for several rock bands and musical theater.
He is a computer whiz as well as being a musicologist. Finally, we
are happy to welcome back Ms. Ann Vassilopoulos who moved to the big
city of Hilo in 2003 and found she missed KHS so much she returned.
She partners with Ms. Beverly Tanaka in the science department, teaching
biology, chemistry, and physical science.
