Assistance Dog Training offers a unique hands-on opportunity to
learn leadership skills and positive social values through the
training of assistance dogs for disabled people. Students develop
positive behaviors, taking responsibility and being sensitive
to the needs of others; learning and applying specific techniques
to their relationships and incorporating them into many areas
of their lives.

A club for students with a taste for reading and exploring their
ideas about the books read in common with other students. Takes
place throughout the year during lunch recess.
Class Bonding Activity

An overnight camp out offered to all classes for the purpose
of planning class goals and objectives for the school year. Students
have an opportunity to become a cohesive group and focus on class
goals with lasting friendships throughout their years at the High
School.

Citizenship, education up close! Local learning activities and
American problems. Study culminates with a field trip to Washington
DC for one week of seminars and site visits. Extra curricular
studies and meetings lunch recesses and after school. Activity
takes place September to April.
Electronic Car Team

This is an extra- curricular team activity which involves approximately
200 hours to complete construction of an electronic vehicle. The
project is a DOE / Hawaiian Elec. partnership. Fully standards-based
integration of academics (Language Arts, Math, Science) with hands
on vocational technology. Project takes place August to May. See

Future Career and

Mission is to promote personal growth and leadership development
through family and consumer sciences education. Takes place year-round,
weekly if needed.

Students partake in Hawaiian language, culture, history and dance.
Activities are planned and filed trips an option through fund
raising efforts.

Promotes civic mindedness through community service. Students
usually work on one major project a year sometimes in a joint
project with the Rotary Club. Open to students in grades 9-12
with meetings two times a month during the school day, but also
some evenings and weekends.

This Club focuses achieving personal goals as well as serving
your community. Students gain leadership skills, self-confidence
and get to know other people. This is an opportunity to make a
difference in this world!

Chris Brown
The Kohala Math League team competes with schools from the Big
Island five times during the year. Math topics arithmetic through
analytic geometry are covered. The competitions are a great way
for students to fine tune their math skills and discover how they
compare with other island students. Individual high scores attend
the annual State Math Bowl which is held for all schools in the
state.

This committee organizes the full May Day program early in the
Fall of the school year. The committee selects the May Day court
utilizing a variety of criteria. They collaborate to design program,
theme, costume, and event logistics.

Students have an opportunity to build their skills in speaking
and debate as they use legal terminology to defend their case
on legal matters. Students gain important knowledge in understanding
the role of our judiciary system and how they can proactively
represent themselves in a court of law.

Students have an opportunity to explore the art or writing and
graphic display through the school publication (Ka Leo Na Opio)
and yearbook publication. Both groups meet every day throughout
the school year and are guided by critical ongoing publication
deadlines. The groups work extensively to provide the school community
with current issues impacting our Kohala High School teens.
National Honor Society

NHS is a national organization that recognizes students that have
shown academic achievement (3.0+), leadership and service. Students
are inducted into NHS by the faculty recommendation. NHS members
are required to participate in community service projects. Takes
place throughout the school year.

Various assemblies for sports and extra-curricular activities are
held to keep school / class spirit and to update faculty, staff
and students on various events. Takes place monthly, usually the
first Friday of the month.
Speech Club (KHSSC)

Mission: to promote public speaking opportunities for Kohala High
students. Extra curricular meetings through lunch recess. Students
participate in Hawaii State Speech League competitions governed
by National Forensic League in Interpretative or debate events.
Members also do several community oriented events and services.

The purpose of the Student Council is to have a structured student
organization that is the students voice. Officers are elected
by the student body which functions to establish leadership and
cooperation to carry out responsibilities as good citizens and
to promote the general welfare and interests of the students and
school community. Takes place every month.

Students with an interest in a teaching career are encouraged
to join the Teachers of Tomorrow Club. This organization helps
to clarify the role and responsibility of teachers and acts as
a liasion service between student and career pathways in teaching
fields.

Students develop projects in the industrial and engineering areas,
work with projects in the school, community and businesses. A
state meet is held each year on Oahu. This program offers an integrated,
practical learning experience.
Youth Leadership

This is a program whereby youth from the state of Hawaii can participate
in learning more about government and legislative action with
direct application
to Kohala youth activities and programs. Mentorship is provided
by Representative Dwight Y. Takamine. A trip to the state capitol
to lobby for the resolution of bills as well as leadership conferences,
camp, and a banquet are some of the activities that students partake
in.
