Advanced Placement courses are offered for those desiring a challenge in US History, Calculus, AP Biology, and English. Students are required to complete a summer project and take the AP exam as part of the class. A high score on the AP exam could earn the student a credit for college.

CSAP is a program with a mission “to provide all students with a support system so they can be productive citizens”. As an integral part of support, the CSAP program focuses on minimizing the problems of school drop-out and alienation. As a prevention and early intervention program, it provides relevant instructional and counseling services to those students in need.

Counseling is available to all students who are experiencing a heightened need for help with personal, family or school issues. Crisis Counseling usually lasts from 1-6 sessions and then can either stop or turn into more regular meetings with a counselor and with consent from parents.

Modified schedules are available to juniors and seniors who are employed. Students must be in good standing and on track for graduation. Students must provide registrar with a letter verifying employment. Work-study credit is awarded if the employer is willing to address course objectives and evaluate student’s performance.

A statewide program that provides opportunity for the academically qualified to enroll in community college classes thru the UH system as part of their high school coursework. Students receive credit for each college course successfully completed for college and high school.

Provides students of all ages with expertise and support for a wide range of issues including individual, peer and relationship difficulties, family issues, school problems, etc. Counselors are available to meet individually, with families, or groups of students dealing with similar issues. A team approach among parents, school personnel and school-based behavioral health counselors determines eligibility of recipients.

School Community Council (SCC)

SCC is a council that supports the mission statement at KHS, which calls for complete quality education for each student. The Council reviews and implements school improvement needs regularly. The Council provides a forum for input from segments of the school and community that fall under the Council's jurisdiction. It generally meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm on the school campus.

The counselor’s office primarily focuses on guidance, both personal and career. The counselor is available to help students help themselves over rough times and to rejoice with them during their successes. There is always an open door to any student or parent.

Section 504 provides the classroom or school modification(s) necessary to enable the student without disabilities (or temporary disabilities) to receive an equal opportunity for and access to education/services. A student is referred by a teacher or family member. Following a review of the needs and the eligibility criteria, a student begins to receive the identified needed services.

The special education department at KHS provides a multitude of services to the students that are eligible dependent upon their individual needs. The types of services vary from full-time/intensive to those requiring only minimal support and assistance while in all regular education classes. The SPED department is comprised of certified special education teachers and educational assistants (EA’s).

An SST meeting is called to review identified student data and information whereby various options are discussed and school-level programs/services are offered. The Team develops a coordinated action plan to help assist the student. The student’s performance/progress is monitored and reevaluation or adjustment of action plan is completed as needed. Team members are convened when necessary.

Each year, the Hawaii District sends out a survey to all parents to determine interest/need for a summer school program. Summer school is an optional, self-sustaining program. Student enrollment basically determines if classes will be offered. There is no guarantee that a program will be available on a year to year basis at Kohala High School.

A program of the Hawaii Community College offering academic support for students who want to attend college. Includes college and career planning, self-esteem, cultural information, college campus tours and other excursions, as well as help in getting financial aid and scholarships. Qualifying students come from lower income families and first generation college applicants. Federal funds support this program, although students fund raise for major trips.

Tutoring is provided in math, English, social studies, and science at no cost to the student on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. This is an excellent opportunity to improve failing grades or enhance skills in other academic areas.

Prepares students for college through career exploration, college testing and a six week summer residential program at University of Hawaii at Hilo. Six to eight students are selected yearly from under-represented minorities, first generation college, and low-income families. A federally funded program, administered out of UH-Hilo, this is a sister program to Talent Search.

An abstinence-based sex education program for teens. Together with an instructor, teens discover the differences between men and women and how to celebrate those differences, the secrets of self-control and discipline, the building blocks of health relationships, the true meaning of intimacy and bonding, and whether or not they are in love or in lust. WAIT Training teaches teens about the enormous freedoms they can enjoy when they say “NO” to sex, but “YES” to relationships.
