A daylong field trip offered to all classes for the purpose of planning class
goals and objectives for the school year. Students have an opportunity to become
a cohesive group and focus on class goals with lasting friendships throughout
their years at the High School.

Citizenship, education up close! Local learning activities and American
problems. Study culminates with a field trip to Washington, D.C. for one week of
seminars and site visits. Extra curricular studies and meetings at lunch recesses
and after school. Activity takes place September to April.

Gear Up (Gaining
Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)

A partnership
program with the State of Hawaii DOE, University of Hawaii system, and community
organizations. Gear Up's goal is to enable more of Hawaii's students to choose
post secondary education. Initiated by a federal grant to the State of Hawaii
to support middle school reform and need-based scholarships for low-income students.

Students partake in Hawaiian language, culture, history and dance.
Activities are planned and filed trips an option through fund raising efforts.

Promotes civic mindedness through community service. Students usually work on
one major project a year sometimes in a joint project with the Rotary Club.
Open to students in grades 9-12 with meetings two times a month during the school
day, but also some evenings and weekends.

The Kohala High School crediu union is sponsored by Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union. The primary purpose is to provide financial education to all young people and to promote thrift and savings to it members.

The Kohala Math League team competes with schools from the Big Island five times
during the school year. Math topics from arithmetic through analytic geometry are covered.
The competitions are a great way for students to fine tune their math skills
and discover how they compare with other island students. Individual high scorers
attend the annual State Math Bowl, which is held for all schools in the state.

This committee organizes the full May Day program beginning early in the fall of the school
year. The committee selects the May Day court utilizing a variety of criteria.
They collaborate to design program, theme, costume, and event logistics.

Students have an opportunity to build their skills in speaking and debate as
they use legal terminology to defend their case on legal matters. Students gain
important knowledge in understanding the role of our judiciary system and how
they can proactively represent themselves in a court of law.

Students have an opportunity to explore the art of writing and graphic display
through the school newspaper (Ka Leo Na ‘Opio) and yearbook (Makahiki) publications.
Both groups are part of an elective class which meets throughout the school year and is guided by critical
ongoing publication deadlines. The groups work extensively to provide the school
community with current issues impacting our students.
National Honor Society (NHS) 889-7117

NHS is a national organization that recognizes students that have shown academic
achievement (3.0+), leadership and service. Students are inducted into NHS by faculty recommendation. NHS members are required to participate in community
service projects which take place throughout the school year.

Mission: to promote public speaking opportunities for Kohala High students.
Extra curricular meetings through lunch recess. Students participate in Hawaii
State Speech League competitions governed by National Forensic League in Interpretative
or debate events. Members also do several community oriented events and services.

The purpose of the Student Council is to have a structured student organization
that is the students’ voice. Officers are elected by the student body
and functions to establish leadership and cooperation, to carry out responsibilities
as good citizens, and to promote the general welfare and interests of the students
and school community. Meetings take place every month.
Teachers Of Tomorrow (TOT) 889-7117

TOT has been created in response to the declining number of teachers. The program
is designed to recruit students into the teaching profession, provide hands
on experiance to prospective teachers, and help students reach college. The
TOT program is dedicated to the furture of the teaching profession and actively
promotes a positive image of teachers.
Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) 889-5891
Steve Olson
Students develop projects in the industrial and engineering areas and
work with projects in the school, community and businesses. A state meet is
held each year on Oahu. This program offers an integrated and practical learning
experience.
Youth Legislative Leadership Program 889-7124

This is a program whereby youth from the state of Hawaii can participate in
learning more about government and legislative action with direct application
to Kohala youth activities and programs. Mentorship is provided by Representative
Dwight Y. Takamine. A trip to the state capitol to lobby for the resolution
of bills, as well as leadership conferences, camp, and a banquet are some of
the activities that students partake in.
